In Bahalana Fiona Gavino (WA) uses Filipino basket weaving techniques to create large-scale sculptural installations. Inspired by a 2014 residency in Manila, she responds to the resilience of Filipino identity after more than 300 years of colonial occupation.
By engaging with the country’s material cultural traditions of basket weaving, Gavino discovered a universal language, connecting with locals through her work.
These works were first exhibited at Pan Project Space run by 98B COLLABoratory, an artist-run-initiative in Manila.
Opening Friday 31 July at 6.30 pm.
* Fremantle Arts Centre is operated by the City of Fremantle.
