The exhibition URBAN AXIS presents a selection of key works by more than 40 Southern African artists, spanning all media from painting to video and performance. Touching upon themes ranging from remnants of history, colonisation, emancipation, gender and identity, relationships, geo-politics, and German + Dutch + English legacies on Southern Africa these artists assert themselves not just as important new voices in the world of art, but also important interlocutors for cultural engagement and dialogue between Australia and Africa.

Artists like Mary Sibande, Athi-Patra Ruga, Mohau Modisakeng, Larita Engelbrecht, and others, who have previously featured at MoMA NYC, Guggenheim Bilbao, Tate Modern and the Venice Biennale, and are held in international collections headline this exhibition which challenges preconceptions of Southern Africa and nurture cross-cultural discovery.

Listen to West African sounds by Abobo Tracks during the evening and enjoy the new exhibition layout with additional works.

URBAN AXIS is proudly supported by MJA Studio, South African Airways, Quest Apartment Hotel Fremantle, City of Fremantle, Art on the Move, Art Africa, PSAS and AVPartners Perth. Engine for Progress is supported by the City of Perth through the Winter Arts Program.

For the after party, stick around for Fremantle’s famous Hidden Treasures kicking off at 8.30pm.
