Insider Art: Spring 2018 showcases the creative achievements of incarcerated prisoners from across Western Australia.  The collection of new works exhibited represents a diverse array of traditional and contemporary approaches to art making. Pieces exhibited include those from traditional Aboriginal artists with 50,000 years of culture to draw upon; those created by prisoners engaged in tertiary courses in contemporary art practice; and everything in between. Across Western Australia participation in creative processes and formal art classes play an important role in rehabilitation, personal development and complement existing educational programs. Transportation Exhibition

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Hougoumont, the last convict ship to arrive in Australia, Fremantle Prison’s new exhibition Transportation examines the forced migration of convicts from Britain to Australia in the 18th and 19th centuries. Transportation presents the stories of men, women and children forcibly sent to convict sites around Australia, exploring the social tragedy of the convict system as a whole as well as individual stories of personal achievement. Tunnels Tour

Feeling adventurous? Get into your hardhat, slip into your overalls, lock into the ladder system and descend approximately 20 metres below the Prison to explore a labyrinth of tunnels built by prisoners. Discover original blast holes, bores, oil lamp recesses and artefacts from the days when working in the tunnels was hard labour for prisoners. Guides lead the trek through dry sections of the tunnels on foot, before boarding replica convict punts to explore the submerged passageways accessible only by boat. Wildlife Zoo at the Markets

We love having West Oz Wildlife, one of Perth’s leading wildlife petting zoos, at Fremantle Markets. They provide a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with native Australian animals such as koalas, snakes & dingoes. You can usually only glimpse such animals amidst big crowds in larger reserves or zoos. Just like adults, children also need to learn tools to help them relax, reduce stress and build resilience. Yoga for children also helps to improve strength, flexibility, coordination and balance in a fun and inclusive environment.Our Mala Kids classes are based on the evidence-based program developed by Yoga Ed, teaching children mindfulness, movement, and social emotional learning.Classes will include breathing exercises, warm up, yoga postures, movement, creativity and relaxation.Classes are open to all children aged 9 to 12 years. Class runs for six consecutive weeks, investment is $90 per child.
