Transportation Exhibition

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Hougoumont, the last convict ship to arrive in Australia, Fremantle Prison’s new exhibition Transportation examines the forced migration of convicts from Britain to Australia in the 18th and 19th centuries. Transportation presents the stories of men, women and children forcibly sent to convict sites around Australia, exploring the social tragedy of the convict system as a whole as well as individual stories of personal achievement. Fremantle Round House - 1pm cannon firing

Discover WA’s oldest public building . Find out what the ‘curfew bell’ was used for, how many cells the Round House had in the 1800s, and maybe even get locked up in our stock and pillory! At 1pm (sharp) each day, join us as we fire the cannon and lower the time ball on the Gun Deck next to the Round House. Torchlight Tour

Explore the darker side of Fremantle Prison’s history. The Prison walls echo with stories of loneliness, pain and suffering, of executions gone wrong, of the innocent unjustly imprisoned and the guilty punished.  Join our Guides in the dark as they entertain you with sordid and ghastly stories. Wildlife Zoo at the Markets

We love having West Oz Wildlife, one of Perth’s leading wildlife petting zoos, at Fremantle Markets. They provide a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with native Australian animals such as koalas, snakes & dingoes. You can usually only glimpse such animals amidst big crowds in larger reserves or zoos. Bookmaking Short Course

Monday evenings from 6pm - 8pm at The Meeting Place, South Fremantle. 13th 20th and 27th August. Learn three different bookmaking methods and take home your own beautiful hand made books. Learn how to bind, stitch, cover and assemble your own books made from leather, book cloth and specialist materials.  Individualise your books by hand embellishing and making your own end papers.
